Troubled Spanish carrier Iberia will take delivery of eight new Airbus A330 aircraft starting in January, with features including remodelled economy and business class seats.
The new fleet of A330s will serve long-haul routes between Europe and the Americas, and is part of Iberia’s Transformation Plan, which will see the carrier drop underperforming routes and increase frequencies to other destinations.
The new fully-flat business class seating will offer “longer beds, a greater degree of privacy, more storage space, and a larger entertainment offer”, while the revamped economy seat will feature individual TV screens, and connections for passengers’ electronic devices.
The new seating will also be “gradually introduced” to Iberia’s existing fleet of Airbus A340-600 aircraft.
This week the carrier announced plans to drop routes to Athens, Istanbul, Cairo, Santo Domingo and Havana, although it will increase frequencies and/or capacity on flights to destinations including Brazil, Mexico, Miami, Central America, Chile, Ecuador, London, Casablanca, Algiers, Dakar, Nouakchott and Malabo (for more details click here).
The Transformation Plan also calls for the redesign of Iberia’s website, new VIP lounges at Miami and Buenos Aires, and a new business class check-in area at Madrid’s T4.
Last month the carrier’s parent company IAG announced that Iberia was losing €1.7 million per day, with the airline’s CEO Rafael Sánchez-Lozano admitting Iberia is in a “fight for survival” (see online news November 9).
