If you have purchased an iPhone 5 or updated your handset to iOS 6, you should notice a new app called Passbook, which allows users to store coupons, boarding passes and other forms of mobile payment.
Lufthansa has just made available mobile boarding passes via Passbook. Once passengers have completed mobile check-in, their boarding pass will be sent to their iPhone and saved to the app. The pass can then be called up at any time, even when the handset is not connected to the internet. The boarding pass will also appear on the lock screen as notifications.
By the end of the year, Lufthansa aims to upgrade the service to include automatic updates and alerts of flight information such as departure gate changes.
The mobile boarding pass is available for all departing flights from Germany and operated by Lufthansa, SAS, Luxair, Austrian, SWISS, Air Canada, Brussels Airline and TAP Air Portugal. The service is also available at a host of airports worldwide, particularly in Europe and North America. In Asia, the mobile pass is accepted at the airports in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo (Narita), Osaka and Nagoya.
