Seoul offering pre-paid sim cards for visitors

10 Aug 2012

Two new pre-paid sim card services, specially designed for inbound travellers, have been launched in Seoul, making it easier for business travellers visiting the Korean capital to check in with the office and family back home.

The new sim cards can both be used in travellers’ existing phones, provided they are 3G and WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) compatible.

For visitors who are stopping over in Korea or staying a short time, 02 Mobile is providing Universal SIM cards charged with various amounts of credit, which can be bought from the 02 Mobile centre at the City Air Terminal next to the COEX exhibition centre.

Meanwhile, travellers visiting for longer can get Korea Telecom’s “OLLEH Simple” prepaid sim card plan. This lets you charge-up an amount of money without paying a subscription fee or service charge. It is available by visiting one of the KT Global stores around the city (find store locations here).

According to the KT Global website, using this sim card to make an hour long international call to the US, UK, Germany, France, China, or Singapore should cost just US$6.

The introduction of these new pre-paid sim card services became possible by Korea’s unbundling of its mobile phone networks earlier this year.

Many international cities are improving the ease of connectivity services for visitors: free wifi, for example, is becoming more available in public spaces. For a report on Hong Kong's free wifi hot spots, click here.
