Hilton Hotels and Resorts is to open a 300-room hotel in the Iraqi city of Erbil, adding to the previously announced Doubletree Suites by Hilton Erbil.
The Hilton Erbil Hotel and Spa is scheduled to open in 2016, and will be set in landscaped grounds north of the city. The release says that “a number of foreign embassies” are planned for the area in the next two years.
Facilities will include 30 suites and ten chalets, a health club, indoor and outdoor pools, an Eforea spa, two speciality restaurants, and meeting space including a ballroom accommodating up to 1,000 people.
Erbil is the capital of the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region in the north of the country, and has recently attracted a number of new hotel developments, including two Starwood projects (see online news April 29).
Hilton Worldwide announced plans for its first Erbil hotel last year – a 200-suite Doubletree property due to open at the end of 2013 (see online news September 7, 2011).
