Qantas is to offer its wireless QStreaming in-flight entertainment service free of charge to economy and business class passengers on selected B767 aircraft.
The carrier has already fitted one B767-300 aircraft with the technology, with more aircraft set to be fitted “later in 2012”.
Unlike sister airline Jetstar, which provides paid-for iPads pre-loaded with content (see online news November 10, 2011), Qantas will stream content via wifi to iPads provided free-of-charge to all customers.
According to the carrier’s website the central content server holds over “18 times the storage capacity of a 64GB tablet”, allowing it to offer over 200 hours of TV and audio programmes.
Qantas also says that “Later on, you'll be able to put the new system to the test using your own smartphone, tablet or laptop”.
The first aircraft fitted with QStreaming will predominantly operate east coast routes, as well as services to Perth.
