Terminal 1 of Shanghai Pudong International Airport will undergo a major renovation that will see facilities upgraded and capacity expanded in response to rising passenger traffic.
The project, which will begin this year for expected completion by 2014, will expand the retail space by an additional 6,000 sqm, as well as the baggage handling system and the transfer facilities in order to make the hub more efficient. However, specifics have not yet been revealed.
Fortunately, enhancement works will only rumble in the background and flights will operate as per normal.
This revamp is in addition to other projects already underway to upgrade the airport, including the construction of two more runways on top of the existing three. The Pudong airport is one of the busiest in China, with passenger traffic currently exceeding 40 million a year and is predicted to reach 60 million by 2015.
