Wyndham opens 500th hotel in Asia-Pacific

5 Jun 2012

Wyndham Worldwide, which has 7,150 hotels in 65 countries under a wide range of hotel brands including Ramada, Howard Johnson and Travelodge, has opened its 500th property in Asia Pacific – the Super 8 Nanjing Shan Xi Lu, a 100-room budget hotel. With the rate being as low as RMB228 (US$36) per night, the rooms here offer basic amenities but wifi is available. Located on the street of Lao Cai Shi in Gu Lou (Drum Tower) District, this Super 8 is surrounded by eateries and is 2km away from the main railway station.

Nanjing is a booming industrial city with manufacturing lines of several multinationals such as Volkswagen. Its Lukou International Airport serves mostly domestic destinations but it is linked to several international cities such as Seoul-Incheon (Asiana and China Eastern), Nagoya-Centrair and Osaka-Kansai (China Eastern), Hong Kong (Dragonair) and Frankfurt (Lufthansa).

As previously reported (see story here), Wyndham Worldwide’s success in the region has been a result of its clever strategy of targetting second-tier cities first with budget and mid-scale brands catering to the large number of middle-class travellers before expanding to the luxury sector in the competitive markets of Beijing and Shanghai. Its growth in the region is expected to continue with the introduction of three new brands - Tryp by Wyndham, Hawthorne Suites and Wingate by Wyndham (see story here), in addition to a Planet Hollywood hotel on Hainan Island (see story here).
