Flybe launches routes from East Midlands

4 May 2012 by ScottCarey7

Flybe has announced a significant expansion of its regional services, with new routes launching from East Midlands and Newquay Cornwall Airports.

The airline will offer flights from the Leicestershire airport to Amsterdam, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Jersey as part of its winter programme. Schedules are being finalised and the routes are expected to launch on 28 October this year.

This bank holiday weekend will see the launch of the summer routes from Newquay to Belfast City, Newcastle and Norwich. Flights begin on May 5 and will operate through to September. Including these three routes, Flybe will serve Newquay Cornwall Airport from seven UK destinations, a move the company has referred to a as a response to customer demand.

The expansion of services from both Newquay and East Midlands is part of the carrier’s recently announced brand repositioning and commitment to “make flying better”. The new East Midlands’ routes will allow regional passengers to access long haul destinations via the major hubs at Amsterdam and Paris CDG, providing an alternative to London Heathrow.

The move comes following the announcement that Bmibaby, which has a considerable presence at East Midlands, will be halting all flights by September (see online news May 4).

“We welcome Flybe’s commitment to East Midlands Airport,” says Ken O’Toole, chief commercial officer of Manchester Airports Group, the parent company of the regional base. “The new services will provide increased connectivity for business and leisure passengers, and is a reflection of the airline’s commitment to the region and the businesses that operate here.”

“We are pleased to announce this major expansion at East Midlands Airport,” says Flybe’s managing director of Flybe UK, Andrew Strong. “We already serve 35 UK airports, so it makes sense for us to add these key services at the start of our 2012-13 winter schedule.”

In a separate release Flybe announced that it will now be serving Starbucks coffee, tea and hot chocolate onboard as further part of the “making flying better” initiative.
