Carriers reroute flights ahead of North Korean satellite launch

10 Apr 2012

Three Asian carriers have announced adjustments to flight routes in light of North Korea’s imminent satellite launch, which will affect flight timings by five to 20 minutes as a result.

According to the South Korean government, North Korea plans to launch its satellite sometime between April 12 and April 16, despite international condemnation and pressure against it. In response, Japan Airlines (JAL), All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Philippine Airlines (PAL) have announced that due to “restrictions to some areas off-shore the Philippines and some aerial routes,” a number of their flights will need to be rerouted.

For JAL and ANA, the affected services are between Tokyo (Narita) and Manila, Jakarta and Singapore. Meanwhile, PAL has announced that since the satellite will “fall just east of Luzon,” flights between Manila and Guam, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Tokyo (Narita), Nagoya, Fukuoka and Incheon as well as the Cebu-Tokyo (Narita) service will all have to be rerouted.

JAL has also announced that it will waive fees for reservation changes for affected flights until April 24, 2012, although the waiver does not apply to rerouting fees. Changes must be made by calling JAL reservation hotlines directly.
