Five hotels connected to shopping malls

15 Feb 2012

Sometimes, when abroad for work, you might want to buy a little something for your family or friends back home, but you just don't have the time. These five properties connected to shopping malls solve that conundrum, allowing guests to indulge in retail therapy without having venture far.

Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, Jakarta

The iconic Hotel Indonesia, directly opposite the famous Selamat Datang Monument, was one of the first five-star hotels in the country when it opened in 1962. For the past two years, the hotel has been managed by the Kempinski hotel group, which has upgraded the service standard while retaining its legacy and heritage.

Shopping mall: The hotel is connected to the large Grand Indonesia mall, which sprawls over two buildings – the West and East malls – connected by a multi-level bridge. The mall itself houses a range of brands from the more casual Gap and Esprit to the more high-end Burberry and Gucci. The hotel’s lobby is connected to the East mall via a glass bridge.

Opening hours: The mall is open everyday from 1000 until 2100

Novotel Bangkok Platinum Hotel, Bangkok

The new Novotel hotel, which opened in December last year (see story here), is located in the heart of the city near Siam Square and local attractions such as the Erawan shrine. The hotel features the brand’s new "next generation" rooms that incorporate smart design and transparency in order to induce a sense of space, even in relatively small rooms starting from 25 sqm (see story here).

Shopping mall: The hotel is in fact a part of the Platinum Fashion Mall and is located above the mall’s new wing of Zone 3. The shops cater to a younger, trendier crowd with a mixture of local and international fashion brands.

Opening hours: The mall is open from 0800 until 2000 on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. For the rest of the week, the mall is open from 0900 until 2000.

Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai

This new Ritz-Carlton property is located in the up-and-coming financial and commercial Pudong district of Shanghai, which now consists of the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. The hotel itself, which opened in 2010, sits atop the mixed-use International Finance Centre (IFC), from the 39th floor up, boasting spectacular views of the city’s famous Bund.

Shopping mall: The IFC tower that houses the hotel is also home to a high-end shopping mall, which is connected directly to Level 1 of the hotel (the arrival lobby). The six-storey mall consists of luxury stores such as Louis Vuitton, as well as Shanghai’s first Apple store.

Opening hours: The mall is open everyday from 1000 until 2200

St Regis, Shenzhen

This hotel opened at the end of last year (see story here) and sits on the highest floors of the tallest building in Shenzhen – Kingkey Tower - in the city’s Luohu district and close to the train station that connects Shenzhen to Hong Kong. The hotel, comprising floors 73 to 100, is one of the first to introduce the brand’s signature butler services to the city.

Shopping mall: The multi-purpose Kingkey Tower, alongside the hotel, offices and residential apartments, consists of the KK Mall on the first five floors. The mall, though located in an area known for counterfeit fashion items, houses over 150 brands and the Shenzhen’s first IMAX cinema.

Opening hours: KK Mall is open everyday from 1000 until 2200

W Hotel, Taipei

The trendy W Hotel opened a year ago (see story here), making it among the first of a wave of new international hotels opening in the city after almost a decade long hiatus. The hotel, located in the Xinyi district and close to the city’s landmark Taipei 101, has since been injecting the city with fresh experiences that revolve around the hotel brand’s passions – fashion, music and design.

Shopping mall: The hotel building itself houses the Uni-Hankyu Department Store, on Levels 1 to 7. The mall consists of a mix of international brands and several hip Japanese brands, including Uniqlo.

Opening hours: The mall is open everyday from 1100 until 2200
