Movenpick to expand worldwide with 11 new hotels

10 Feb 2012

Movenpick Hotels and Resorts announced plans to open 11 new properties around the world, including five in Asia-Pacific, bringing the group’s total number of hotels worldwide to 100.

The first of its Asia-Pacific openings will be a 26-villa boutique resort in Chiang Mai, scheduled for the end of this year, followed by a 380-room Movenpick Resort and Spa in Sanya, scheduled to open in 2013. Other projects, that will open from 2014 onwards, include a hotel in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia and resorts in Bali, Pantai Pandak Beach in Malaysia and Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh.

The hotel group is also focusing on the Middle East region, with four separate projects in the pipeline there. The group is poised to open a 298-room property in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in April this year, followed by two hotels in Tunisia in 2013 and one hotel in Marrakesh to be opened in 2014.

The final property, to be opened in January 2013, will be a 282-room property in Paris’ suburb, Neuilly.

“We have always believed in growth, but at a sustainable pace. In every region from Europe and Africa to the Middle East and Asia we have carefully consolidated our developments to maintain a balanced portfolio,” said Jean Gabriel Pérès, president and chief executive of Movenpick Hotels and Resorts.

Currently the hotel has 69 hotels in operation, including its newest properties in Singapore – the Movenpick Heritage Hotel Sentosa - and Bangalore (see story here), both of which opened last year.
