Star Alliance carrier Spanair has ceased all flights this evening (Friday January 27), despite a reported attempt by Qatar Airways to rescue the airline.
Star Alliance's Facebook page says that "member carrier Spanair has unfortunately suspended its operations", while the airline's own website is carrying information on refund options, and "special fare" agreements with fellow Spanish carriers Vueling, Iberia and Air Europa to certain destinations.
According to respected aviation website flightglobal.com Qatar Airways had been in talks to rescue the Barcelona-based carrier, but these negotiations have now collapsed.
Spanair had been previously owned by SAS, but the Scandinavian carrier sold the majority of its shares in the airline in 2009 to a Catalonian consortium.
UK routes served by the carrier included London, Manchester and Edinburgh.
