Edition Hotels announces expansion plans

27 Jan 2012 by BusinessTraveller

Lifestyle hotel brand Edition Hotels is to add properties in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Bangkok, Abu Dhabi and Gurgaon to its existing Istanbul hotel.

The joint venture between Marriott and Ian Schrager launched its first property in Waikiki in 2010 (although the resort is no longer part of the Edition portfolio), and added the 78-room Istanbul Edition last year (see online news February 9, 2011).

Since then hotels have been announced in Miami (within the former Seville Hotel) and London (within the former Berner’s Hotel in Fitzrovia), and this latest announcement adds developments in New York, Bangkok, Abu Dhabi and Gurgaon to the list.

The New York property will be located within the Clock Tower building at 5 Madison Avenue, with renovation and conversion work set to start in late 2012.

The Bangkok Edition will comprise part of a mixed-use development within “one of the tallest buildings in Bangkok”, while the Abu Dhabi property will form part of the Al Bateen Harbour complex with Abu Dhabi Marina.

Finally contracts have been signed for properties in Los Angeles and Gurgaon, India. Exact opening dates for the new properties have yet to be announced, but the group says it is “on track to have six hotels operating in major global gateway cities on three continents by 2015”.

When the Edition brand was first announced in 2009 Marriott described it as “the first truly global branded boutique / lifestyle hotel on a large scale” - for a closer look at the offering see First Edition in the January 2011 issue of Business Traveller.
