Langham and Accor chart North Asia expansion

10 Jan 2012

Langham Hospitality Group and Accor have both signed new hotels in the pipeline for 2012 in Shanghai and Seoul respectively.

Langham Hospitality Group has signed the Eaton Luxe Xinqiao Shanghai with Greenland Group. Located in high-end residential areas in the Songjiang district, the 214-room hotel is scheduled to open in late 2012. It will feature Eaton’s signature E-Club lounge, and F&B destinations include all-day dining restaurant – Espresso, the T Lounge and Yat Tung Heen Chinese restaurant.

The group’s regional vice-president, Lo Young said: “ The addition of Eaton Luxe, Xinqiao strategically expands our portfolio in Shanghai as our partnership with Greenland Group develops. Eaton Luxe is proving to be a popular new choice for owners and partners in China who understand the concept of creating an impressive yet never intimidating luxury experience for the guest.”

The other four Langham Hospitality Group properties in Shanghai include the Langham Xintiandi, The Langham Yangtze, Eaton Luxe Nanqiao and 88 Xintiandi.

Meanwhile, Accor has announced its first Mercure property in Seoul, South Korea with Mercure Ambassador Gangnam. Situated in the area of Gangnam, the 288-room hotel will feature a contemporary style that reflects the local environment. Set for completion in the first quarter of 2012, the hotel will have four meeting rooms, a restaurant and a bar.

“Accor hotels in Korea have performed exceptionally well these past three years, running at over 90 per cent occupancy rate annually in the Seoul market. Accor sees South Korea as a country of full potential and looks forward to continue its hotel expansion to meet the increasing demand for international brands in the country,” said Patrick Basset, vice president of operations for Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan.

Amadeus, provider of technology solutions, has predicted South Korea to be a market to watch this year. According to figures released by the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO), more than nine million visitor arrivals were recorded for the country as of December 1, 2011 (see story here).

Upcoming Accor properties in Seoul include the ibis Ambassador Insadong, slated to open in 2013, and the Novotel Ambassador Seongbuk in 2016.
