American Airlines (AA) and Hainan Airlines (HU) have entered a reciprocal codeshare agreement.
The AA code will be placed on direct flights operated by HU beyond Beijing. This will allow customers on AA’s Chicago-Beijing flights smooth connections to various cities within China. The code will also be placed on HU’s flights between Beijing and Seattle.
Customers on HU’s Beijing-Seattle flights can access AA's domestic network in return, as the HU code will be placed on AA's flights to US cities from Seattle onwards. Hainan's code will also be placed on American’s flights between Shanghai and Chicago/Los Angeles and between Beijing and Chicago. American Airlines operates 1,487 domestic flights daily.
In addition, members of both airlines' loyalty programmes will gain reciprocal frequent flyer benefits as well. The agreement, subject to government approval, will open new markets in China for American Airlines. From Beijing, Hainan Airlines offers service to more than 40 Chinese cities.
Last week, AA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, but have assured customers that flight schedules will run as per normal (see story here).
