Air Asia launches Big loyalty scheme

14 Nov 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Malaysian low-cost carrier Air Asia has launched Big, a loyalty programme which enables members to earn points (biggies) which can be redeemed for benefits including Air Asia flights, e-gift vouchers and merchandise.

Members earn points by purchasing Air Asia flights and products, or when they spend with any of the airline’s partners in either Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand or Indonesia, which are set to include Budget, Avis, Citibank, Diners Club, Hertz and Tune Hotels.

Avis and Hilton Hotels and Resorts will also be global partners for earning. Members can also earn points by shopping at more than 1,000 retailers or at Air Asia’s megastore (airasiamegastore.com).

Members earn one point for every RM4 (80p) spent on an Air Asia flight fare, one point for every RM2 (40p) spent if the flight is booked with any add-on such as a pre-booked meal, and one point for every RM1 (20p) spent when purchasing a Premium Seat ticket. UK-based travellers will be interested to know that points can be earned on long-haul Air Asia X flights, with the carrier now operating out of London Gatwick airport (see online news October 25).

As an example, a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok with a meal, baggage and insurance could earn 281 points, while the equivalent without any add-ons might earn 125.

Points can be redeemed once 1,000 biggies have been banked. Air Asia says that all seats are available for redemptions, and as such rates will vary according to demand.

As an example the carrier says that 500 points will get members a flight to Siem Riep, Penang or Singapore, while 1,000 can be redeemed for flights to Bangkok, 5,000 for Bali, Ho Chi Minh City, Macau and Guangzhou, 15,000 for Delhi, Perth, and Tianjin, and 30,000 for Melbourne, New Zealand, Seoul and Tokyo. There are no blackout dates, and members are responsible for payment of taxes and charges with all redemptions.
