The Park Hyatt Sydney is to reopen its doors in late 2011 following a revamp that has cost more than AU$60 million (£39 million).
The luxury 155-room property, located in the Rocks district of the city on the edge of Sydney Harbour, closed in March for extensive renovations.
These have included adding three rooftop suites on a new fourth level that offer panoramic views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, as well as a larger spa and gym, a new restaurant and private dining space, and revamped meeting facilities.
Guestrooms have also been refurbished in a modern style and neutral colour palette, with technology such as media hubs to link gadgets to the TV. They start from 40 sqm in size and all have balconies.
General manager Andrew Mensforth told Business Traveller the works were “not a curtain-and-carpet job but a complete renovation” of the property, aimed at creating a “contemporary, stylish and somewhat residential feel”.
He said that much of the thinking behind the redesign was to boost the hotel’s iconic vista. “We’ve knocked down so many walls and done so many things to open up that view to the Opera House,” he said. These have included using larger window panels and blinds in the guestrooms, and raising the ceiling in the restaurant.
Mensforth added that the new design made use of sandstone and local timber to reflect the local area, and that bespoke Australian artworks had been commissioned.
