Qantas flight diverted to Dubai due to engine issues

4 Nov 2011

As if Qantas didn’t already have enough problems, a flight en route to London was forced to make an emergency landing in Dubai due to “an engine oil defect”.

According to a spokesperson for the carrier, the flight from Singapore to London was carrying a total of 258 passengers, including actor, author, journalist and comedian Stephen Fry, who has been Tweeting about the incident.

“Still stuck on Dubai tarmac. No one seems to know how long we’ll be here. Should’ve landed in London at 0620. That wont happen!” Fry tweeted.

Further details have not been released from Qantas.

This incident is another major blow to Qantas’ reputation as it comes immediately after the carrier grounded its entire fleet of 108 aircraft due to industrial action (see story here), costing the carrier an estimated A$20 million (US$21 million) per day.
