Lufthansa launches dual loyalty credit cards in the UK

4 Nov 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Miles and More members based in the UK can now apply for a joint American Express and Visa credit card account, offering up to 1.5 miles for each pound spent.

The two cards offer different earning rates – 1.5 miles per £1 spent on the American Express card, and 1.5 miles per £2 spent on the Visa card.

Applicants will also receive a welcome bonus of 1,500 miles so long as they make a card purchase within 90 days of opening the account.

The card has no annual fee, and a representative rate of 16.9 per cent APR (variable). Cardholders will also benefit from zero per cent interest on all purchases for the first three months, and zero per cent on all balance transfers for the first 12 months (providing they are made within the first three months of opening the account).

The card is provided by MBNA, and interestingly Lufthansa subsidiary Bmi has seemingly aligned its own credit card offering with that of its parent company, by relaunching its existing MBNA American Express Diamond Club credit card, as a joint Amex and Visa offering similar to Lufthansa’s new product.

The Bmi partnership offers a no fee card earning account holders 1.5 miles for every £1 spent on their American Express card, and 1.5 miles for every £2 spent on the Visa card. New customers will also receive 20,000 bonus miles if they spend £250 on the card within the first 90 days.

A Bmi Plus Credit card is also available with an annual fee of £85, offering two miles for every £1 spent on the Amex card, and one mile for every £1 spent on the Visa card, plus a welcome bonus of 24,000 miles, two Bmi lounge passes annually, 4,000 status miles annually, and double miles on bookings made at flybmi.com.

It’s not clear what would happen to Bmi’s Diamond Club, or its credit card offering, should today’s agreement in principle for British Airways to purchase Bmi go ahead (see online news November 4).
