SkyTeam will implement a standardised baggage policy for Elite and Elite Plus members of the frequent flyer programmes across all of its 14 member airlines in order to simplify multi-carrier travel. This is set to take place from September 1 onwards.
The new ruling, which applies to all upper tier members regardless of the frequent flyer programme they belong to, provides them with the same extra baggage allowance. Thus, elite or elite plus members are entitled to 10kg or 20kg extra weight respectively. When flying with airlines that have adopted a piece concept instead of a weight system, they will be allowed one extra bag.
This replaces the current inconsistent system of having separate baggage policies for each of the 14 members.
Earlier this year, IATA introduced a consistent baggage policy for interline journeys based on the Most Significant Carrier (MSC), defined as the first carrier crossing IATA Areas or Sub-areas (see story here), also aimed at reducing contradictions or confusion for the passenger.
