Travel to Heathrow and Gatwick set for weekend disruption

9 Aug 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Travellers heading to Heathrow airport by road this Sunday should be prepared for their journey to be “severely affected” by Olympics test event the London-Surrey Cycle Classic road race.

The 140km road race takes place on Sunday August 14 on a loop from central London to Surrey and back, taking in locations including Richmond Park, Hampton Court and Box Hill.

The map below shows the area within which roads will be “closed, restricted or heavily congested”, including stretches of the M25 approaching Heathrow airport.

Transport for London advises that affected roads will be closed “for the majority of the day”, and says that travel to both Heathrow and Gatwick may also be disrupted.

BA’s website advises passengers to “plan ahead” if travelling to or from Heathrow, and says that while tube services will be running as normal, they may be busier than normal.

The cycle race is one of several test events taking place this summer ahead of the London 2012 Olympics.
