Ryanair to launch Stansted-Barcelona route

5 Aug 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Low-cost carrier Ryanair will fly twice-daily from London Stansted to Barcelona El Prat airport starting from December 1, effectively replacing its existing service to Girona.

The airline is “downgrading” its base at Girona airport, which Ryanair refers to as Barcelona (Girona), with flights to London Stansted set to be dropped from the start of the winter season.

The switch of flights to Barcelona El Prat will likely appeal to business travellers, as the airport is located just 7.5 miles from the city centre, compared to Girona's location nearly 60 miles north of the city.

Flights will depart Stansted at 0615 and 1740, arriving at Barcelona airport’s Terminal 2 at 0945 and 2110 respectively. The return legs will leave Spain at 1020 and 2145, landing back into London at 1140 and 2305.

Easyjet currently serves Barcelona from London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, and recently announced plans to operate flights from London Southend airport to destinations including Barcelona and Ibiza next year (see online news June 16). BA flies to the Catalan city from Heathrow and London City. Leisure carrier Monarch Airlines has also announced plans to fly from London Gatwick to Barcelona from October 21 (see online news July 18).
