American Airlines to offer Samsung Galaxy Tabs in premium cabins

14 Jun 2011 by BusinessTraveller
American Airlines is to provide the latest Samsung Galaxy Tabs to its business and first class passengers, on selected routes served by B757 and B767 aircraft. The carrier will roll out a total of 6,000 Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets beginning later this year, offering a 10.1-inch screen and replacing the current personal entertainment devices offered on selected transcontinental and international services. The routes which will benefit from the new devices include international flights to and from Europe and South America served with 767-300 aircraft; transcontinental flights between New York's JFK and Los Angeles, JFK and San Francisco, and Miami and Los Angeles served with 767-200 and 767-300 aircraft; and transcontinental flights departing from Boston to Los Angeles served with 757 aircraft. The above suggests that selected flights between London and US destinations will see the new devices. Services from London to Los Angeles and New York are served by B777 aircraft, but those to Boston, Dallas and Chicago are operated by a mixture of B767-300 and B757/B777s. Flights from Manchester to New York and Chicago are operated by B757 aircraft. Samsung says that the Android-powered Galaxy Tab 10.1 is “the thinnest large screen tablet currently available in the world” at just 8.6mm. It’s not yet clear what entertainment will be available on the tablets, but AA says that “the innovative Galaxy Tab will give our premium customers a modern and innovative inflight entertainment experience”, and Samsung adds that the tablets will be customised for the carrier’s inflight entertainment needs, including the addition of expanded memory.
