Five Hong Kong-New York flight options to consider

18 May 2011

As the world’s economic weight steadily shifts to Asia, courtesy of powerhouses China and India, links between North America and Europe and Asia strengthen without pause. For example, the airpath between Hong Kong and New York has seen increased activity, which, according to Cathay Pacific's new chief executive John Slosar, was due to the territory's enduring reputation as "a world financial hub" (see here). Strong positive feedback about the added services could lead to even more services, he said. Last year, passenger traffic between Hong Kong and the USA and Canada accounted for 7 percent of total traffic.

Below are five of many airlines that offer regular flights between Hong Kong International Airport and John F Kennedy International Airport:

CATHAY PACIFIC AIRWAYS

The carrier currently flies to New York four times a day, and is keen to add a fifth frequency.

CONTINENTAL AIRLINES

From Hong Kong, the passengers flying Continental can get to the Big Apple via Newark in New Jersey, which is a daily service.  Another alternative is to take a flight to Tokyo-Narita with onward connection to JFK International Airport. Continental recently revealed plans to roll-out a daily service between Hong Kong and Tokyo Narita.

DELTA AIRLINES

At the moment, the airline does not have direct flights between Hong Kong and New York. Flights to the Big Apple from the territory can be routed via Tokyo or Detroit. Delta offers daily return flights between Hong Kong and Tokyo Narita. From the Japanese capital, passengers can take the connecting flight to JFK International. Delta passengers in Hong Kong can also choose to fly to Detroit for the first leg of their journey. The carrier flies five times a week from Hong Kong to the US city on Mondays, Fridays Saturdays (with return services on Wednesdays and Thursdays). From Detroit, Delta passengers from Hong Kong can pick any one of the five daily flights to  JFK International. Take note, however, that none of these onward flights co-ordinate seamlessly with any of the HK-Detroit flights and passengers will have to spend a night in Detroit.
