United Airlines has painted one of its Airbus A320 aircraft in a 1970s-era “Friend Ship” livery, as part of the carrier's 85th anniversary celebrations.
The retro livery was unveiled at an employee celebration at United's hub at Chicago O'Hare International airport, and is set to visit United and merger airline Continental's hubs at Denver, San Francisco and Houston over the next week.
The Friend Ship livery was chosen by employees from United historical liveries. United's history dates back to April 6, 1926, when an airmail delivery took place using a Swallow biplane. The airmail contract was owned by Walter Varney, who later sold his business to United Aircraft and Transport.
