The big picture: New Doha International Airport

16 Mar 2011 by AndrewGough

Exclusive new images of what passengers can expect from New Doha International Airport (NDIA), the new home of Qatar Airways due to open at the end of next year.

Qatar Airways Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker told Business Traveller:

“The new airport will have a maximum capacity of 50 million passengers, though on the opening day it will only be 25 million passengers. [In the current airport] Last year we were just over 16 million passengers, and I think the existing airport will have to handle nearly 20 or 22 million which is why we have just completed a separate arrivals building and the old arrivals building is now a new departure building.

"We are expanding the building to add another 12 gates which will be ready in the next three months. Infrastructure on the ground is the biggest challenge for any growing airlines.”

Al Baker said the airport had an advantage because it could operate for 24 hours a day.
