Christchurch airport closed following earthquake

22 Feb 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Christchurch airport remains closed following a 6.3-magnitude earthquake which hit the city on Tuesday lunchtime. The airport says it hopes to reopen domestic services on Wednesday morning.

The official twitter feed for Christchurch airport posted the following message around an hour ago (1500 GMT February 22):

"CHC Airport is working hard to HOPEFULLY start Dom flights by 8am Wed 23 Feb"

But the airport also says that international passengers should not go to the terminal until an official announcement has been made - for more information visit christchurchairport.co.nz.

Local media reported that at one stage all flights out of New Zealand had stopped, as the country's air traffic control centre is located in Christchurch, although flights from Auckland have now resumed.

Air New Zealand has posted information on its planned services to and from Christchurch tomorrow (February 23), and has introduced ticketing flexibility on all fare types for passengers due to travel to and from the city - for more information click here.
