Marriott debuts in Libya

15 Feb 2011 by AndrewGough

Marriott International has announced the opening of its first property in Libya, the five-star JW Marriott Hotel Tripoli.

The debut of the 370-room hotel marks Marriott’s entrance into a country with a chequered history of foreign relations. But improved diplomatic relations with the US and other Western countries have opened up the North African country as a tourist destination.

The hotel has an "elegantly relaxed décor" in keeping with the JW Marriott brand, with lounges, restaurants, a gym and spa. All 370 rooms and suites feature "JW Revive" bedding, cable TV, high-speed internet, a mini bar and safe, and a bathroom with bath and separate shower.

The Safara and Riviera restaurants serve Mediterranean and Southern French cuisine respectively, while Singapura offers a pan-Asian menu. The 492sqm of meeting space includes three conference rooms plus a 362sqm ballroom that divides into four smaller sections.

The Saray Spa offers “traditional Middle Eastern” treatments and has as a gym, sauna, Jacuzzi and 23m pool.

The world’s largest JW Marriott opened in Indianapolis this month (see online news February 7), and other future JW locations include Bangalore and Gaakoshibee in the Maldives. The JW Marriott Hotel Tripoli is the fourth JW Marriott to open in the Middle East and Africa region.
