Qantas Airways has announced a rise in fuel surcharges for international routes in response to global hikes in oil prices.
This latest levy will apply to tickets issued on or after February 19. Surcharges on flights to Europe will increase by 53 percent one way from US$96 to US$147, and by 35 percent on flights to North and South America and South Africa going from US$86 to US$116. Finally, for flights to Asia-Pacific, fuel surcharges will rise by 36 percent, from US$55 to US$76.
This is the first time in three years that Qantas has opted for such a step. Jetstar, the carrier’s low-cost subsidiary, recently announced it would not raise surcharges in order to continue offering cheap fares.
Other Asian carriersm including CX, ANA and SIA, also raised fuel surcharges earlier this month due to record high oil prices (see story here).
