Mandarin Oriental opens Dinner by Heston Blumenthal

2 Feb 2011 by BusinessTraveller

Heston Blumenthal’s first London restaurant has opened within the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, with a menu “heavily influenced by his ongoing research and discovery of historic British gastronomy”.

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal is open for lunch from midday till 2.30pm, and dinner from 6.30pm to 10.30pm, and will also offer afternoon tea from this May. The restaurant is headed up by Ashley Palmer-Watts, group executive chef of the Fat Duck, Blumenthal’s three-Michelin-starred restaurant in Bray, Berkshire.

Dishes have been “inspired by Britain’s historic gastronomic past and recipes dating as far back as the 16th century”, with choices including Scallops with Cucumber Ketchup and Peas, Slow Cooked Short Rib of Beef in Red Wine Juice with Triple Cooked Chips and Tipsy Cake, made with Spit Roast Pineapple and Jersey Cream. A three-course set lunch is available from £28, with a three-course a la carte dinner from £55.

Also on the menu will be Meatfruit, a starter created to look like a Mandarin, but which is in fact a chicken liver parfait with a mandarin gel exterior served - for more information see online news October 26, 2010.

The restaurant’s interiors have been designed by Adam D Tihany, combining a contemporary British Brasserie concept with historical elements including wood, leather and iron. There are views over Hyde Park and into the open kitchen via floor-to-ceiling windows, and facilities including a ten-seater private dining room, a six-seater chef’s table, and a terrace for summer dining.

The arrival of Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London follows the opening last year of Daniel Boulud’s first European restaurant, also at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park. For a review of Bar Boulud, click here.
