IndiGo, the domestic low-cost carrier based in New Delhi, has made the biggest commercial aircraft purchase in history: the carrier announced yesterday that it has signed an Memorandum of Understanding to buy a total of 180 single aisle Airbus A320 aircraft to upgrade its fleet and eventually expand its network to international destinations.
The carrier stated that of the 180 aircraft, 150 will be the upgraded neo versions of the A320 and the rest will be the classic models. Deliveries will begin in 2016 through to 2025.
The carrier plans to mount international routes in August this year, since government regulations oblige Indian carriers to fly domestically for five years before going international. IndiGo began operations in 2006.
