Hyatt announces further Chinese expansion

15 Oct 2010 by AndrewGough

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts has named a further 11 Hyatt Regency, Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt properties currently under development in China.

Including previous announcements, this takes Hyatt’s development pipeline in the country up to 22, spanning all of its full service brands including Andaz.

Of the 11 properties (see below for the full list), three are set to open in 2011, plus one from those previously announced. These are the 350-room Hyatt Regency Jinan, 364-room Hyatt Regency Guiyang and 450-room Hyatt Regency Qingdao, plus the 253-room Park Hyatt Ningbo.

Nong Xia, senior VP of real estate and development, said Hyatt’s aim was to expand in “emerging Chinese cities and resort destinations”.

“One of the drivers of our growth in China is the creation of new urban centers and resort areas where we have the opportunity to establish Hyatt-branded hotels,” Nong said.

The 22 properties will expand Hyatt’s presence in Greater China, taking the portfolio up to 39 in total. Traditional key markets such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Taipei will be joined by hengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Sanya Sunny Bay, Suzhou, Wuxi, and Xuzhou.

Last month Business Traveller spoke to Rakesh Sarna, Hyatt’s chief operating officer, about the hotelier’s expansion plans for Europe (see online news September 27).
