The newly opened Astor Hotel Tianjin distinguishes itself as the Starwood Group’s first Luxury Collection property in China.
Located in Tianjin's Heiping commercial district, the landmark dates back to 1863 when it was established by British missionary John Innocent. As with other prominent hotels of the time such as The Peace Hotel in Shanghai, The Beijing Hotel in Beijing, The Raffles in Singapore and The Imperial in New Delhi, this architectural gem became the preferred meeting place of the city’s movers and shakers.
The hotel's reopening was originally scheduled for May (see news) but instead took place on August 28.
It features 152 rooms occupying two wings, the Astor Wing and Hai River Wing, meeting spaces for up to 240 guests, a business centre and Wi-Fi internet access throughout the building. Dining and drink options include an all-day dining outlet, Chinese restaurant, lobby lounge and an English style pub.
Leisure facilities include a fitness centre, an indoor swimming pool and a museum showcasing various memorabilia associated with the hotel and its past.
Until December 31, 2010, there are two special rates offered. The first is CNY1,863 (US$273) for two nights, with the second night free of charge and comes with breakfast for one (with CNY100/US$14.68 charged for a second person). The second is CNY1,298 (US$190) per room per night with breakfast of the same value.
One of China's renowned port cities, Tianjin has recently seen some movement in hotel development after many years of inactivity. Radisson opened last year (see previous news), while a Raffles was launched in May (see news). For more on Tianjin, click here.
