The Thai government approved yesterday the expansion of Suvarnabhumi Airport, which will raise passenger capacity to 60 million a year, local media is reporting.
The proposed THB62 billion (US$1.9 billion) project will consist of a satellite passenger terminal, connected to the main building by an underground link. The new concourse will accommodate 28 aircraft, including Airbus A380 jets. There will also be new taxiways and office buildings.
Construction will begin in 2012 but will not be completed until at 2015 at least. When the facility launched in late 2006, Airports of Thailand officials predicted it would easily reach its passenger capacity of 45 million annually (see news). That figure will be achieved by year-end.
