W Leicester Square delays opening till early 2011

8 Jul 2010 by BusinessTraveller

Fans of the Starwood’s W Hotels offering will have to wait a little longer to sample the brand in London, as the group has pushed back the opening until Valentine’s Day 2011.

We were alerted to the news by a post on our forum earlier today, and a quick look at the hotel’s website confirms that the property is now taking reservations from February 2011 – Starwood had previously scheduled an opening date of this summer, before pushing this back until October.

The hotel also has also set up a Facebook page, with a recent status update saying:

“You know how you feel when you're in a rush to get out the door and you haven't had quite enough time to perfect your look? No one notices or anything but you don't feel quite right. That's how Mr W is feeling just about now. So I'm holding off opening the doors to my shiny new hotel on Leicester Square for a little bit longer. You know it'll be worth the wait - all the very best things are.”

The hotel is located on the corner of Leicester Square on the site of the former Swiss Centre, and will feature 192 rooms and ten two-level luxury residences. Business Traveller had a hard hat tour of the property at the end of 2009, where Starwood unveiled design concepts including a huge disco ball in the hotel’s bar, and a multi-coloured interactive façade (see online news December 12, 2009 for more details).

W Hotels recently announced it will open a hotel in Abu Dhabi in 2013 (see online new May 4), but also sold two of its New York properties to the St Giles Hotel Group earlier this year (see online news April 18).
