Sankara Nairobi hotel to open in August

23 Jun 2010 by AndrewGough

Nairobi is to get a new luxury hotel in August when the Sankara Nairobi opens its doors.

The first property from Sankara Hotels and Resorts, the 156-room hotel is located in the Westlands area of the city, 5km north of the centre. Its soft opening is scheduled for the beginning of August with the formal launch in mid-September.

Rohan Patel, director of corporate development at Sankara Hotels and Resorts, said: “Westlands is an emerging business hub in Nairobi. It’s close to the residential areas and more than 90,000 sqm of new office space has opened up in and around the location of the hotel.”

He called the design of the hotel “contemporary and international, with key references to the location”. It also features what Sankara says is Nairobi’s largest collection of modern African art.

Rooms start from 32 sqm in size and are equipped with flatscreen TVs with “plug and play” capability, DVD players and free wifi. The hotel also has a Club lounge, a spa, rooftop pool, a gym and four restaurants. The Gallery deli and wine bar will offer more than 5,000 bottles and up to 40 wines by the glass.

The hotel’s meeting space caters for up to 220 delegates theatre-style, and Patel said Sankara had acquired a piece of land next door that would be turned into an “African-Asian fusion garden”. This would create “a sanctuary in the middle of the bustle of the city” and would be capable of hosting events for 200 people.

Sankara plans to open further properties in “key gateway cities” in Africa, including Dar es Salaam and Accra. It aims to have signed its next contract by the end of this year.
