Edition Hotels to debut in Waikiki Beach and Istanbul

9 Jun 2010 by BusinessTraveller

The first properties marking the partnership between Ian Schrager and Marriott Innternational have finally been announced, with Waikiki Beach due to open in October, and Istanbul later this year.

The Edition Hotels concept was first unveiled back in 2008, and there have been persistent reports that Istanbul would be among the first openings (see online news March 20, 2009). But Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii will now have the privilege of welcoming the first Edition property in October, followed by Istanbul later this year, and planned openings in Mexico City, Barcelona and Bangkok.

The latest release from Edition says that the brand will “combine the personal, intimate, individualised and unique lodging experience that Ian Schrager is known for, with the global reach, operational expertise and scale of Marriott”.

It continues that the hotels will function as a “home away from home”, and will offer business travellers “functional, technologically sophisticated working environments that provide the comfort and ease of actually conducting business in an ‘office away from the office’”. Despite partnering with a global hotel group of the size of Marriott International, Edition says its will be “the antithesis of an institutional ‘hotel chain’”.

The Waikiki Edition will feature 353 rooms, with views of the city, pools, yacht harbour or ocean, and many featuring furnished terraces. Facilities will include custom made beds, 46-inch TVs, free wifi, daybeds and large work areas.

Other features will include a restaurant by renowned Japanese chef Masaharu Morimoto (previously head chef of Nobu in New York), as well as Crazybox nightclub, Sunrise Pool with landscaped gardens, and a private sunset beach, with its own lagoon and imported sand from neighbouring islands.

The hotel will also offer weight loss “Surf and Bikini Boot Camps”, along with a spa, the largest luxury ballroom on Oahu island, and an outdoor movie theatre.

The Istanbul Edition meanwhile will feature 77 rooms and suites with Rosewood or Soaped Oak walls, ceilings and floors, described as being a like “a unique and precious jewel box”, with silk rugs, and marble bathrooms with floor-to-ceiling glass enclosed showers. Other facilities will include Cipriani restaurant, a double-height lobby with gold and silver mosaic, a penthouse floor ballroom, a 20,000 square foot spa, a private drawing room with honesty bar, and a screening room.
