Vietnam Airlines joins SkyTeam on June 10

Vietnam Airlines will formally join the SkyTeam airline alliance on June 10 and is offering special online discounts to mark the event.
An internet promotion offers 10 percent discounts for all flight tickets purchased online from 9pm, June 9 until 8:59 pm the next day, Vietnamese time.

Vietnam Airlines flies to 20 different destinations within the country and to 29 international destinations.

SkyTeam is one of the world’s three major airline alliances, alongside oneworld and Star Alliance. It now has 10 official members and three associate members. It serves in 856 airports in 169 countries.

Aside from Vietnam Airlines, SkyTeam includes Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air France, Alitalia, China Southern Airlines, CSA Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Korean Air. Air Europa and Kenya Airways are currently associate members.

The alliance has set its sights on Asian expansion. Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines is tipped to become a full member in 2011. Garuda Indonesia has also expressed an interest in joining the SkyTeam alliance.

Tarom of Romania is also due to join as a full member on June 25.
