Taiwan’s Evergreen Group has announced that its hotel arm, Evergreen Hotels, is entering China.
The chain and Shanghai Pudong Software Park Company are teaming up to build the Evergreen Laurel Hotel in Pudong, Shanghai. They are targeting a 2013 opening.
The property is a 10-minute ride from the Shanghai Expo site and near the future Shanghai Disneyland Resort, scheduled for a 2015 debut.
Taiwan, despite decades of strained relations with China, has invested billions of dollars in the Mainland’s economy. But this appears to be the first time that a hospitality group in planning to make inroads in the tourism sector. The also home grown but more established Howard Plaza Hotels & Resorts has still not ventured out of the country.
Evergreen Laurel Hotels are located mostly around Taiwan – Keelung, Taichung, Tainan, Taipei – and overseas in Penang, Bangkok, Fukuoka and even Paris.
