Yotel announces New York property

2 Mar 2010 by BusinessTraveller

Capsule hotel brand Yotel is to open a 669-room property close to New York’s Times Square, its fourth hotel and the first outside of an airport.

Due to open in 2011, Yotel Times Square will be located at 42nd Street and 10th Avenue, as part of a 60-storey, 1.2 million square foot development which will include residential units and the Frank Gehry-designed Signature Theatre. The building itself is being built according to LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver standards.

While the hotel will retain many of the Yotel concepts such as mood lighting and free wifi, rooms will be larger (16sqm as opposed to 7sqm for a standard cabin and 10sqm for a premium offering at the brand’s Gatwick property), reflecting the city-centre location rather than an airport stopover. Business Traveller is awaiting confirmation as to whether rooms will feature the bunk bed/convertible sofa-sleeping product or the hourly rates currently offered at the brand’s existing airport properties.

The New York property will also feature a club lounge and “the largest hotel outside terrace space of any hotel in New York”.

Part of the Yo! Group (founded by Simon Woodroffe, pictured right alongside CEO Gerard Greene), Yotel debuted at London Gatwick in 2007, and has sinced opened properties at Heathrow and Amsterdam Schiphol. The brand has recently received “major investment” from IFA Hotels and Resorts, a development company operating out of Dubai and with its head offices in Kuwait.
