China Eastern poised to join an airline alliance

2 Mar 2010

Star Alliance, oneworld or Skyteam? Which one will China Eastern Airlines bless?

The only carrier of China’s three top aviation players – Air China (Star Alliance member) and China Southern Airlines (Sky Team member) comprise the other two – that has yet to join an airline grouping has been reported to be in talks with various alliance officials.

Its spokesperson Luo Zhuping has confirmed this with a number of media outlets, adding that while Shanghai Airlines, an acquisition of China Eastern, is part of Star Alliance, this is not expected to influence its final choice.

Using Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport as hubs, the 22-year-old airline boasts a strong regional network that includes major Japanese cities as well as several strong long-haul offerings, including a Shanghai-New York service.
