Movenpick makes it to Bangalore

22 Feb 2010

Movenpick Hotel & Spa Bangalore is planning to open in October this year, all part of the chain’s expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, which has not been its traditional stronghold. This will be its first property in the subcontinent.

More widely recognised in Europe and the Middle East, the brand had a property in Beijing until about 2002 when it pulled out. It returned to Asia in 2006 with the meetings-oriented Movenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach, Phuket, followed by Movenpick Hotel Saigon (shut down for renovation, see news) and Movenpick Hotel Hanoi.

The 182-room property in one of India’s fastest growing “metros” will target a mainly corporate clientele. It has an Italian restaurant, café, rooftop Japanese and Thai bar and lounge, spa and 1,000sqm of banquet facilities. The opening rate will be pegged at around US$162.

Bangalore, now called Bengaluru, is dubbed the “Sillicon Valley of India” for its heavy concentration of IT companies and high-tech enterprises, as well as educational and research institutions. Huge jumps in visitor arrivals in recent years have made the need for reasonably priced accommodation much more urgent.
