Westin breaks out from North American focus

15 Feb 2010

Opening two Westin properties in China within a month of each other – The Westin Shenzhen Nanshan on January 9 and The Westin Tianjin on February 8 – was just a teaser in the bigger scheme of the chain's expansion this year. It has announced that 14 more hotels are scheduled to roll off the pipeline including China (again), India and Latin America.

"Today, the Westin brand is primarily in North America, with 70 percent of our portfolio in Canada and the United States," said Nancy London, vice-president of Westin Hotels.

"The Westin brand is at a pivotal point in its life cycle, with an unprecedented opportunity for international growth," she added. New members of the chain's portfolio will include The Westin Nanjing in Shanghai; The Westin Mumbai Garden City in India; The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino in Messinia, Greece; The Westin Austin at the Domain in Austin, Texas; and The Westin Sendai in Sendai, Japan.

Also, Starwood will debut the Westin brand in Peru in 2010 with The Westin Libertador, Lima and expand the brand's footprint in Latin and South America with its fifth hotel in Mexico and its first in Mexico City, The Westin Santa Fe.

Majority of the hotels opening in emerging destinations will be new builds. This latest generation of Westins will continue to promote healthy-living initiatives to travellers, a crusade the chain is passionate about.
