Emirates to launch Madrid route

5 Jan 2010 by Mark Caswell

Emirates is to commence a daily service to the Spanish capital on August 1, in doing so becoming the only scheduled airline to fly between Spain and Dubai.

The carrier will serve the route with three-class A330-200 aircraft, configured with 12 first class seats, 42 in business and 183 in economy. Flight EK141 will depart Dubai at 0725, landing in Madrid at 1320, returning as EK142 at 1615, arriving back into Dubai at 0105 the next day.

The move is significant as Spain is not well served by routes to the east, with the exception of direct services from Madrid to Doha with Qatar Airways and Singapore with SIA.

Commenting on the new route chairman and CEO of Emirates Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum said:

"The new Madrid route is particularly significant because we will provide the only scheduled passenger service between Dubai and Spain. It will also give passengers out of Spain much easier access to our international hub in Dubai, where they can travel onwards to popular destinations in Asia and the Far East. If there is one route that we have been repeatedly asked about in recent years, it is Spain, so I believe we will make a lot of people very happy with this announcement."
