Accor's mid-market brand Mercure has named its 32nd UK property after an unlikely historical figure – America’s first president.
The Mercure Newcastle George Washington Hotel Golf and Spa is situated near the village of Washington less than ten miles from Newcastle Upon Tyne. According to various sources, it is from here that the Washington family took its name, dating back to the 1100s.
The property itself recently underwent a £9 million refurbishment, £3 million of which went on a conference centre, bar and clubhouse for its 18-hole golf course.
Mercure said many of the hotel’s facilities had been fully upgraded as part of the work, including its restaurant, brasserie, gym, swimming pool and beauty salon.
The guest rooms, many of which have been given a facelift, come in double, twin, triple and family, plus executive four-poster suites. All rooms come with free wifi internet.
Mercure described the hotel as ideal for events such as conferences and weddings because of its two large function rooms with space for up to 180 people. There are also seven smaller rooms for meetings.
