Mexicana joins Oneworld

10 Nov 2009 by BusinessTraveller

Mexicana has become the 11th full member of the Oneworld airline alliance, following an 18-month implementation programme supported by founder member Iberia.

Members of the MexicanaGo frequent flyer programme can now earn and redeem mileage awards on all Oneworld partners, and Conquer and Explore cardholders enjoy Emerald and Sapphire Oneworld status respectively.

The airline has unveiled its first aircraft (an Airbus A320 and a Boeing 717) decorated in the Oneworld livery, with a Boeing 767 to follow, meaning one aicraft from each of its short, regional and long-haul fleets will fly in Oneworld colours. The rest of the fleet will keep the existing livery, but with an additional Oneworld logo on the fuselage.

Mexicana was previously a Star Alliance member up until 2004, but now joins the likes of BA, Iberia, Qantas, American Airlines and Cathay Pacific under the Oneworld umbrella. Russian carrier S7 is also due to join Oneworld next year (see online news May 26).
