Swissotel debuts in India

20 Sep 2009 by Sara Turner

Swissotel Hotels and Resorts has announced plans to open a new property in Kolkata this winter, marking the brand's debut in India.

Swissotel has signed a contract with Bengal Ambuja Housing Development to manage the 147-room hotel, which will be part of the City Centre – New Town development, also featuring shops, restaurants and a cinema.

The hotel will have three restaurants, including a speciality eatery and an open-air restaurant, as well as a lobby and poolside bar. It will also have extensive meeting facilities, with 1,261 sqm of conference space.

Meinhard Huck, president of Swissotel Hotels and Resorts, said: “India is the world’s second-largest nation. Consumer demand is growing steadily, particularly in the cities and the middle class, which is also growing rapidly and has ever increasing consumption needs. Against this background, we see great potential for our hotel chain and are delighted to have found a well-known partner that appreciates our Swiss values.”

The hotel is located 3km from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport, in the district of Rajarhat, which is home to a number of international IT and commercial companies. Kolkata, capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, is the main financial centre in eastern India.
