Continental Airlines will join Star Alliance on October 27 this year, leaving SkyTeam after its last scheduled flight on October 24.
The US airline announced the switch in June 2008, citing its growing partnership with Star Alliance founder member United Airlines. The two have agreed to link networks and services worldwide, codeshare on domestic and international routes and cooperate on frequent flier programmes and lounge facilities.
Continental’s New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport is expected to benefit Star Alliance members.
Continental’s OnePass members will not experience any changes to their OnePass accounts and will continue to utilise their mileage as normal. Their mileage balances will also not be affected by the transition. But through October 24, OnePass members can still earn and redeem miles and make reward reservations on SkyTeam partners.
Once the transfer is completed on October 27, OnePass members will begin earning base miles and Elite Qualification Miles/Points and be able to redeem miles on Star Alliance airlines.
Continental officials have been quick to stress that the parting from SkyTeam was conducted in an amicable manner.
