Starwood’s W Hotels brand has opened its first property in Washington DC, and the 25th W hotel in North America.
According to Starwood the W Washington DC is the closest hotel to the White House, located on the corner of 15th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The property is a conversion of the former Hotel Washington, which opened in 1917 and is now owned by Middle Eastern company Nakheel Hotels.
Features of the new hotel include POV (Point of View), the property’s rooftop bar, a Bliss Spa facility and fitness centre, J&G Steakhouse (pictured) by Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and 12,000 square feet of meeting space. W has combined the Beaux Arts architecture of the buildingwith modern design elements from LA-based designer Dianna Wong, who has created a “pinstripes and lace” theme throughout the hotel.
There are a total of 317 rooms including 23 “Marvellous” suites, seven “Wow” suites, and an “Extreme Wow” suite. All rooms feature flatscreen LCD TVs, docking stations for MP3 players, and a fully stocked Munchie Box (W Hotels’ alternative to the hotel minibar).
W is opening a property in Santiago, Chile this summer, with forthcoming hotels including St Petersburg (2010), London (2010), Milan (2011), Marrakech (2011), Dubai (2011), Bangkok (2011) and Shanghai (2014).
