Fast facts: Converted from a 1950s cinema, the building now houses 46 rooms and suites showcasing American-French designer Dillon Garris’ interplay of ancient and modern Chinese design: funky lipstick-red lattice screens, grey brick walls reminiscent of Shanghai lanes and Chinese pop art. Guests are provided with high-speed wireless internet, turndown service and heated flooring during winter among others. Kuromatsu serves up Japanese meals, while a coffee bar and Wi-Fi lounge offer relaxation and web surfing in a sky-lit atrium.

Fast facts: Exclusivity comes in the form of two units on separate floors, with a choice of king-size and twin beds. Each unit has a bedroom with an en-suite kitchenette and a bathtub in room, and is equipped with wireless broadband internet, LCD TV and IDD phone. Outside meal catering, laundry/dry cleaning and massage services can be arranged, and a rooftop area is available for private parties.

Where is it? In the heart of Shanghai’s central business district adjacent to Nanjing Road, with easy access to the People’s Square, Shanghai Grand Theater and the Bund.

Where is it? Situated in Pudong’s Lujiazui Financial Trade Zone, this boutique hotel is 10 minutes’ drive from Shanghai New International Expo Center and 10 minutes from Xintiandi entertainment district.

Fast facts: Catering for a young clientele, the H Hotel sports a clean, minimalist look. Its name “H” stands for “happy”, “hope”, “healthy”, “hip” and “home”.
